A Degree for Her Future, and a Legacy for Her Son

When Shana Walters discovered Future Forward CT, the timing felt perfect. She had spent months searching for a program that could fit into her life as a full time working parent, but nothing matched the balance she needed. The moment Future Forward CT presented at her CBO, everything clicked.

“It felt like it was meant for me,” she says. “I wanted to show my son what long term commitment and education can make possible.”

She was already progressing in her career with her associate degree, but she knew a bachelor’s would unlock new opportunities. She wanted growth, both for herself and for her family.

A Structure That Finally Worked

Before joining, Shana struggled to find a school that made sense for working adults. Traditional programs came with rigid schedules and unrealistic timelines. Future Forward CT offered something different.

“For the first time, I felt like I did not have to choose between my education and my life,” she explains. “I could successfully manage both.”

The self paced structure, regular check ins, and supportive coaching created a learning environment where she could thrive without sacrificing her responsibilities as a mother or employee.

Skills That Changed Her Confidence

Through the program, Shana strengthened her time management, communication, organization, and leadership skills. She learned how to plan, make decisions strategically, and present her ideas with confidence.

“More than anything, I am walking away with a renewed belief in myself,” she says. “This experience reminded me that I can set ambitious goals, follow through, and create new opportunities for my future.”

Her Biggest Achievement

Shana completed her bachelor’s degree in just six months. It was a milestone that brought her pride, clarity, and a deeper understanding of what she is capable of.

“There were challenging moments, but I stayed consistent and pushed myself,” she says. “My son was a big source of motivation. I wanted him to see what dedication looks like.”

Finishing her degree did not just mark an achievement; it reshaped what she believes is possible for her future.

A New Chapter Begins

Now Shana is preparing to continue her education by pursuing a Master of Education in Education Technology and Instructional Design. She is excited to take what she has learned and move toward leadership roles in education, training, and workforce development.

“This next step is about purpose,” she says. “I want to help others grow in the same way I was supported.”

Her Message to Others

Shana wants future students to know that starting is the most important step.

“You do not have to have everything figured out before you start. You just need to be willing to begin,” she says. “The support is real, and you will never feel like you are going through the process alone.”

Her advice to her past self is the same advice she gives to anyone considering Future Forward CT.

“You have got this. Trust the process. A few months from now, you will be proud you invested in yourself.”
